Default large broms

Just wondering if large broms are ok with darts.

I have 3 Billbergia that are each at least 4-8 inches deep with water.
I cant find a tape measure so that is a guess.

but would these be ok with darts??

thanx for any input,

TODD

The only thing that limits brom size with darts is the size of the tank you have the darts in and how many broms you want in there (one large one or lots of small ones?). That and if the broms will do well in the frog tank conditions.

There is a paper out there on how I believe pumilio tends to lean more towards smaller broms for tadpole care due to predatory presence in the larger broms... but by large brom i mean something 3-5 feet across. Most of the broms used in the dart hobby are miniature to small sized broms, maybe some medium sized plants for the larger tanks.

This goes along with the topic, is it ok to have spiney broms in with darts... sure it is, they evolved with them (the frogs beign speared to death is mostly urban myth mixed with over protective owners). But do you really want to have a spikey mass in your tank ripping up your hands when you have to do work in your frog tank? Ouch.

Thanx , they do have serated edges so thanx for answering that question before I thought of it.

So I do not have to worry about them drowning?

some frogs and froglets will actually dive down in there to get away from what they think is something trying to eat them. Those bodies of water are are pretty small and easy for them to get out of, if you find one "drowned" I doubt the water did it as much that just happened to be the place they died.

Ive used some Billbergia given to me as a gift from Brian's Tropicals. they are quite deep and my pumilio seem to use them. I have not actually seen them used as tad depot but thats where we believe they were deposited. They also seem to be fast puppers and i now have about 6 of them. They are quite tall and skinny and you need at least a 20 gal to use them.

As far as spines go i have had some pretty nasty cuts and scrapes myself. I also have been told by one person that he knows for sure they can hurt frogs. Like he saw it happen, but i personally use pretty much all broms. With 2 exceptions brown recluse and bilmea pasquale. they are just too sharp for me, and not even that cool looking so i just dont use them. Shame too cause the bilmea would be a nice pumilio brom in my opinion.
