Default broms issues

i got 12 broms.. and they arrival very dehydrated.. so i threw it in the tank and mist it with a water bottle r/o water, my humidity in the tank is at 90%, also running 64 watts PC lights. i was wondering how i can revive it, seem like majority of them are dying, the leaves are turning yellow. Also should i cut off the yellow leaves, to reduce the plant from wasting energy to revive dead leaves? any help is appreciated,

milez

If they are dried out, you can soak them in a tub of water for a bit.

Even soaking for 24 hours is not too much. For some reason 2 day shipping is enough to dry them out quite substantially.

How long ago did you receive the plants? If you receive bromeliads and they look dry/dehydrated, it is a good idea to soak them in water for a couple hours. If it's been a couple days, just keep up with what you're doing. Be sure to keep the axils filled with water, as that will help.

Which leaves are turning yellow? If they are the lowest leaves, you can trim them--but it isn't necessary unless those leaves are starting to rot. If they are the new leaves (center) the plant may already be dead--hold the bottom of the plant and pull LIGHTLY on the center leaves, if they come free the plant is already dead.

I hope your plants recover. Sorry if I couldn't offer too much help.

I always try to ship brom's out with the leaves wrapped in moist newspaper. It helps reduce the stress on the foliage considerably.

Not to pick on you but doing this in the summer most certainly will cook plants. The water steams them to death. Seen it (and done it :-/ ) first hand. It is safe to do during average to cool weather. Hot and cold wather should be shipped dry.

Antone, I always appreciate your input. I've never had an issue with this before--and have been shipping plants for 8 years. I always wrap in two layers of paper, and mist the inside prior to packing.

if the heats really that bad, I doubt it's a good thing for the plants, either way.

It isn't but its easier to rehydrate a plant than it is to save a scorched one. Bromeliad expert, Brian Weber, gave me that advice (of course AFTER I scorched a few shipments...). He's been growing bromeliads longer than most members here have been alive.

It's a problem mostly for those who get their mail really late in the day bc they sit in the hot truck. If you order bromeliads in the summer from Tropiflora or Michaels, they won't arrive damp. Better to be safe than sorry.
