Re: mounting broms in a living room
I grow my guys outside, some mounted, only daily misting. Here are some tips that work for me:
1) Do you have a semi-shady spot where they can grow outside? Where are you, btw? If so, keep their cups filled w water.
2) If not, do you use an AC? Then you must get a cool air humidifier. Tomorrow. At lunch.
3) Antone can speak to this better than I: In my experience, the only bromeliads I mount with a bit of sphagnum are neos; seems it reuslts in more vigorous plants. I do not do it for aechmeas or vrieseas. (I don't even try to mount guzmanias.)
4) Maintenance: (And this applies to anyone who wants to try a "bromeliad tree")
--Bright location--a shady porch is great;
--Fairly humid air. To repeat, if you grow indoors and use an AC, you need a humidifier;
--Keep water in the cups. Spray 2 X daily with good water (not hard OR softened)
--1-2X a week, give em a shower.
I have:
Aechmea farinosa discolor
Canistropsis burchelli
Neo 'Midget'
Tillandsia tricolor melanocrater
Vriesea carinata
V. flammea
V. simplex 'rubra'
(And assorted tillandsias, but they're scurfy, not "cup" plants)
All mounted on the front porch, facing SE (sun until 12:30) Been outside since St. Patricks Day--and I'm in da Bronx. I shall bring them in late October.
Hope this helps,
G
