Default ficus pumila

Do I attach the ficus pumila to the background (I know not the roots, I mean the stem part), or do I just plant it in front of the background and let it attach itself?

I got mine from blackjungle. I know it has to be planted, the attach part I was wondering is the stem higher up the plant. It is supposed to grow up the background from the substrate. I didn't know if it attached to the background as it continues to grow bigger or if you have to get it started on the background.

When I used it in my tanks I would attach it to the back ground to give it a head start. After that it took over.

So does it get planted in the substrate and work its way up? or planted at the top and work its way down?
