Default Broms without cups

I picked up some cheap broms from Lowes and don't really know what they are. The seem to look grassier and not really have a cup. I went to put them in my viv and realized they have a pretty good root system. Do they have to be planted in the substrate? I kind of just but them on some bark that was laying horizontal.
I can probably get pics if it'll help....

They are still epiphytes, even with the root system... the mix that they are planted in is very airy and well draining. They can be planted in terrariums if given the same mix... basically an orchid mix of orchid bark, charcoal, etc. Anything with a small partical size that holds any water is not a good idea as they stay saturated in the frog tanks and can rot the broms' roots quickly. I've had good luck having them grow straight out of LECA above the water line, no substrate.
