Default Well, begonias have turned to mush...

I took them out of their pots, washed all the dirt off. Didnt trim the roots. Planted them in the viv (50/50 orchid bark/coco fiber) and a week later they all turned into black slime.

Its happened twice though the one I did first seems to be slowly coming back. What happened?

1 word... Acclimation.

This happens a lot with these things. I have noticed though that the smaller or younger the plant is, the better it seems to go through this process. Try ones like Tiger Kitten or B. bowerae.

Best/easiest way I've gotten begonias to acclimate quickly to new tank conditions... is to start them with leaves/cuttings. Established plants (plants growing in media and/or conditions different from what you're putting them into - doesn't always mean full grown) will usually have acclimation issues, and in begonias it appears especially severe. If they actually like the conditions, they will grow back, but usually I'll just pop in a cutting or leaf to try and get them growing into a new tank.
