Default Vriesea pup help!

I have a potted Vriesea Christiane that I purchased from Lowes a few months ago, but never used it in a vivarium. It has a pup that is about 1/3 the size of the mother. Today while moving the pot I accidently popped off the pup. Then I notticed that the base of the pup is mushy- probably a little rotten.

Can it be saved? What could I do? It doesn't really have a stolon so I wouldn't have a clue how to plant it without worsening the rot. Can these beed grown epipherialy (probably butchered that spelling) or do they have to be potted?

Thanks

~Rachel

If its rotting but hasn't gotten too far yet, you can use sulfur to try and stop the rotting. I think HD or Lowes sells it. If you can't find it, I've been told Cinnamon will act similar.

After you let it dry out with the sulfur or cinnamon for a day or so, and you're certain there is no rot, you can dip the base into some rooting hormone and then plant it in an epiphytic mix. I would say use the Orchid mix with some added peat moss if you don't already have a good mix.

Don't put it in a viv as the humidity and decreased airflow will only bring the rot back. Instead, fill the center leaf cups with water, water the mix a bit and then place it in a nice bright spot with some good air flow (not windy, just air movement) and hope for the best. Hopefully it is not too late.

Good luck.

if the base is mushy and appears to be rotton, its probable not gonna make IT. but would say its worth a shot, as the Vriesea Christiane is very hardy. just place the pup under good light with some moist sphagnum or peat arround base and see what happens.

they can be grown epiphytically or terrestrially, they will grow to anything that is kept moist(not wet) and can hold them up.

good luck.
