Default Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Macro Lens

Was wondering if anyone here has this lens. I'm looking for something for a Canon 30D that will be a bit higher end and hold up to humidity. I have a trip coming up and was thinking of picking this one up but I'd really have to be able to justify the price.

Also wondering if people suggest any "must have" filters for their macro lenses.

Thanks
Alex

I have one and a number of members here have it as well, it's an exceptional lens and is worth every penny IMO, you will not be disappointed. It makes a great portrait lens as well. As far as filters ... I only use one on my Canon lens's, but I use it on all of them. B+W UV Haze Filters. I use them to protect my glass and find the "glass" used on these filters to be exceptional as well. Buying good glass and putting a substandard piece of glass in front of it makes little sense to me, but protecting the lens does ... so B+W's go on all my high end lens's including my collection of "L" series canon lens's. They are reasonable in some sizes and expensive in others but worth the extra protection.

I also have this lens, and it's actually pretty cheap compared to other high end glass. It's your best option for a macro lens by Canon. It's a nice lens, definitely suitable for dart frogs. Lets you get in good and close. Use a tripod! I don't use any filters, I second the guy who stated you don't want to cover the lens with another piece of inferior glass. I photographed professionally for almost 10 years, and not one pro photographer I met used a filter other than for an effect, mostly polarizer filters. Don't spend a lot of money for a nice lens then put another piece of glass that will dull the image on it! Arg! The lenses are tough, can take a lot of abuse.

That's good to hear. I have a 72mm B+W Polarizer that I like a lot. I'll have to pick up a UV. Thanks for the info.

One of my favorite lenses I've got the standard non L 100 2.8 and I love it! I bought it in photo school years ago and its a great lens. The L IS lens is insanity... I only love my 70-200 2.8 and my 24-70 more

I see the 'non L' lens is about half the price of the L lens. What is the difference?

I ended up getting this lens and it is every bit as good as I could have hoped. It's too bad the warm weather is over. It makes an awesome portrait lens as well.
