Some differences are:
L version has Image Stabilization
L version has some weather sealing
L version has ultra-low dispersion glass element
The first Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro was considered one of the sharpest lenses in the lineup. The one that replaced it added a SM motor for focusing and was considered one of the sharpest lenses in the lineup. So going with one of the previous versions is not a massive compromise.
