Default Panorama prints

I ordered and framed a 36"x12" panorama shot that I purchased off of an online print outlet. I was just wondering, what type of camera would you need to produce prints this size and still look good? They sold the same prints in sizes close to 4-5 foot across and it's on photo paper.

Most digital cameras are capable of it. You just need the proper programs to stitch the images together and it takes some practice.

I have seen some really nice stitched panorama shots from simple point-n-shoots without a tripod. Of course - a tripod really helps.

I don't know any programs to recommend though (haven't done it myself).

If it's a panorama 36x12 would look pretty good even with a 4MP camera if shot properly and stitched well. Single shot 36x48 shots come out fine off of a 10MP camera (preferably SLR at that point).

It's more about the lens you use. For example you could take 1 shot of say, a car, with a wide angle lens and end up with a single image that would print out at about A4 size at 350dpi.

However, if you shot from the same distance with a telephoto lens you would need to take many images to build up a mosaic of the same scene. You would need a panoramic tripod head and stitching software to achieve this properly - otherwise parallax errors will be evident.

Your resulting image would be much larger but still 350dpi.

So the longer the lens, the bigger the image.

With the single A4 image, you could technically drop the resolution to about 200dpi (afaik) to make the shot physically bigger but as said this would lose detail. This wouldn't matter if the image isn't viewed close-up though.

As images get bigger you may also find you need more computer power and storage. Also, I found big frames hard to find.

Here is the print I bought. (It looks great btw).

Notice that they sell one 10 feet across. I'm still wondering if they do this without using a mosaic method (as I said before, it's on photo print paper).

I don't know much about the equipment but being a commercial enterprise they could be using a medium or large format camera for that kind of work.
