Default Photos and Fossils

We decided to take a drive out to Calvert Cliffs state park here in Maryland today and it was a blast! The trails are really well maintained and there's always something fascinating to look at. The main trail winds down to a very small section of beach right next to the cliffs the park is named after. The really cool part is the cliffs are MIOCENE era sea beds that are constantly dumping...and I mean DUMPING tons of fossils onto the beach. In the five minutes I spent at the beach I found a few fossil shark teeth in one handful of sand. These guys are 5.3 to 23.7 million years old and the area is totally littered with them. If anyone ever wants to head down that way for a day of nature, frogs and fossils count me in. It'll be nice to take my time and not have to corral the kids every few seconds. Not to mention carrying their limp sleeping bodies the 2 miles back to the car lol

Default Re: Photos and Fossils

I went there once as a little kid (my dad's side of the family is from DC, but are all gone now other than my dad who lives around here). I have a small bucket of fossilized shark's teeth from there (like a 2 quart ice cream pail FULL).
Another place I remember going a lot as a kid is out towards Point Lookout, there was a civil war prison out there somewhere and I use to find lead bullets.

As far as your pictures, nice as always -- what kind of mushroom is that?
