Space Heater Safety
Winter is approaching and I know many of us use space heaters to provide additional heat to our frog rooms. There was just a spot on the radio about a fire that spread to other houses in Detroit that was started by a space heater. So, I just wanted to offer some tips on using space heaters and I encourage others to share their tips:
- Check recalls religiously. It is sick how many of these get recalled. You can find recalls by going to the back of Wal-Mart in their "ship to store" area or on the website of the manufacturer of the space heater.
- Keep all flammables away from space heater (i.e. carpet, wood, paper, plastic, etc.).
- Take steps to lower the use of the space heater such as sealing off the frogroom, insulating, and adding water to the bottom of your tanks as a heat sink.
Here is a good guide on space heaters: What You Should Know About Space Heaters
