Default Perlite

Would Perlite make a suitable drainage layer on top of a false bottom?

If you have a false bottom, the false bottom alone can be your drainage layer.

Better to leave it OUT of your viv all together. There have been recorded herp deaths due to ingestion/impaction of perlite particles.

Hmmmm, mixed signals. Gonna err on the side of caution and not use. Thank you for the directions

Let me take this opportunity to point out that when opinions vary (which is common on the board), there is some information that us members can use to sort out the mixed messages. All due respect to Dcairelli (he could be a Frog God, for all I know, and I don't mean to single her/him out in any way), but Dane is A) a moderator, B) has over 3,000 posts and C) has been a member since 2004. All of this is info is available in the upper right corner of any post we all make. This doesn't necessarily make him any more correct on this issue, but those things do indicate that he has been around the block. If you have competing points of view, it doesn't hurt to check if someone has been around the boards a while. At bare minimum, a high post count probably means that the person has been reading a lot of different stuff on these boards and when they write stuff, that knowledge should be reflected in what they write. Again, I don't write this to pick on anybody, just to point out that a coin flip may not be the only way to break a tie in terms of competing info.

Again, Dcairelli may have a ton of experience and good reason for weighing in the direction he/she did. I don't know. I have learned that Dane knows what he is doing and gives good advice and is a great asset as a moderator. Next time you see mixed info, I recommend checking out the source info before making a decision.

(OP, you already made the right call, but I echo what Dane said. With so many other options available for drainage layers, I would go with a safer one.)
