Is it OK to use leaves from outside or is it best to buy them from an outside source?

Yeah its fine. Most people use magnolia but also oak and maple are common. I boil or microwave mine to get rid of any pests, like scale. But some people add them as is.

When you use the search function you will come up with a recent thread about this.

It says that some think, putting them in as they are, you will likely benifit from it than it would harm. Of course you should be carefull with polution!
