Usually any hard drying, sturdy leaf will do. Oak and Magnollia are the most popular. The ones from your yard should be fine. Some people rinse, some boil, some soak in mild bleach, some bake the leaves. I personaly give them a good cleaning in warm water and then let them dry. I would worry about pestisides from the ones at your school though.
