hey guys if i am using a couple pieces of driftwood to make my background do i add the layer of gs first and push the wood pieces into it or do i set up the wood first and then gs around the wood?

I prefer to get my wood set up and then GS around it.

I'll usually just great stuff around the wood. Occasionally if the wood needs some support to get it in the position I want, I'll prop it up with cans, boxes, etc. while the great stuff is curing. If the wood is coming from the side of the tank, I'll silicone it in place prior to great stuff application (purely for aesthetics.
