If it was me I would do the following:

1. cover the back or planned GS section in a thin layer of silicone. (many claim this can help the GS stick, but it is not required)

2. GS the background with wood in it as you want. This may require siliconing the wood in place with step 1.

3. After everything has dried I would use leca or a gravel base, unless you are dead set on a false bottom.

The key thing to also note is that you can do many things in this hobby very differently with good success. So if something that was posted does not seem to match your situation then change it. :-) Good luck, and post some pictures.

Just wanted to throw in my 2cents on the coco fibre for hanging baskets.. there are 2 diferent ones that I have seen. One is coated in Latex and actually feels kind of stickey... the other is usually sold in big round sheets .. that one isnt coated and does work great for epiphytes, not to mention creeping fig loves it!

What I did on my last tank, was silicon the driftwood to the glass first. let it dry. if your doing a egg crate flace bottom. I would do that first. Put a dab of silicon the pvc spacers you are using to hold the egg crate up (dont skimp on the spacers, it would suck to find out later you shoulda used more  ) Anyways, silicon the drift woof to the glass. after it drys. sprya the great stuff on there. go easy with it, lol, it will definantly expand 3x its size easily. i then took the mixture of stuff i was gonna put on my back ground and covered the the still wet GS with it. and press it into it.

after wards, i took a dremel to the back ground and shapped some of the areas. smothered the bare areas of GS with silicon then dumped more of the back ground mixture on it.

and this was the result (the lighting really sucked)
