Default Drilling grown in tanks...

Drilling set up tanks?? I got a few free tanks from someone that dont have any drains. I want to drill a hole for a bulkhead fitting without tearing down the tanks. Anyone done this before and if so whats the best way to go about it?

I've drilled setup tanks before. Not really a big deal, you just have to go really slow and do not push on the bit. If you're trying to install a bulkhead, I think your biggest problem is going to be accessing the inside of the tank to screw it together.

Besides dirt, what's between the bottom glass and your drill? Is there egg crate, false bottom, etc. While it won't be as easy, assuming you can get to the glass, you should be able to drill it. Just make sure there is enough water touching the glass so that it doesn't get too hot.

Maybe that's not clear. In 10 words or less... dig hole, fill with a little water, drill.

Putting the bulkhead in will be harder, since it will be nearly impossible to get a clean seal for the gasket.

I drilled my holes from the outside of the tank while spraying water on them.

try this... pvc coupling or pipe in area you intend to drill, it will make it easier to clean the surface for your bulkhead gasket (dig first or shove coupler into substrate and pull out mess)... paper towels are a good idea too. Oh, and a bucket for the mess beneath. But it all depends on which way you are going to drill; from the inside/ and down... or the outside/ and up. I also suggest a battery powered drill. Less chance of getting zapped. Oh yeah make sure that coupling or pipe piece is big enough that you can work inside it. Try a 4" or maybe even a 5". Best of luck.
