We scramble for the perfect score too! Well, at least the other employees do. I just explain that everything that is extra is required for the animals well being. They can ding me all they want.

The problem is not at the employee level. The problem is at the corporate level.

The mantellas were most likely ordered from Strictly Reptiles, then shipped to The Gourmet Rodent (Petco's animal supplier) and then to Petco.

My petcos like a prison the tanks are a huge shelf and there are pea sized air holes on the sides of the tanks which lets air circulate between tanks also some snakes get through and frogs which can go into desert envioments. They also have no brains there was a tokay gecko at petco a while back and it was skinny lost its color had bulging eyes no toes and it never moved I snuck a pic of it to and the best part was they had a under observation sign on a bombina orientalis tank 3 down and they looked fine

There are actually several live animal suppliers depending on location.

But its true, corporations are the ones that put out the rules and guidelines. :/

Again, I'm sure you all would say the same thing if you took a look at how our frogs are captured from the wild, shipped to a dealer, then shipped out for retail sales. You can't see how the frogs are kept by just ordering online. So, in essence, by buying wild caught in general, the situation of mistreatment is perpetuated.

My Petco is new, and has very nice front opening enclosures, with temp and humidity gauges in each tank.
The problem is, it doesn't seem like anyone monitors the tanks or reads the gauges, because they tanks always seem very dry, even the frog tanks. Last time I was there, the white's tree frog tank was around 80-82 degrees and had only 20%-30% humidity.
The tanks seem relatively clean, but the animals seem a little underfed. As many people have said before me, the reptiles seem to fare much better in this type of environment than the frogs.

I know that our petco has electronic sensors in all the tanks that you can program for certain temps and humidty levels depending on the species. The temperature is easy to adjust on there but without any type of misting system, humidity must be raised from hand sprayers.

I honestly don't bother having any frogs except fire bellies and white's tree frogs. Those seem to be the most resilliant to impulse buyers.

I work at a petco, we have several dedicated people for each animal dept. however thats not the case at all petcos and with us its a constant battle with corporate to attempt to raise the standard for reptiles. I bring in pics of my tanks to show potential customers how a properly set up enclosure should look so they don't base it off what petco has. I wish they would just a give us some wiggle room to provide better care.
