History. Look at the middle east conflict as in Jerusalem. You also have the taliban killing of missionaries in Afghanistan (6 Americans Among 10 Missionaries Killed in Taliban Ambush | CommonDreams.org).
As most of America looks at 9/11 it was an attack on western society. There is a time for trying to get along, this is not it. Since the attack the war on terror has been one belief value over another.
So why anyone would put it or even give a thought to placing one anywhere close is beyond me.

The majority of muslims are not violent extremists. Just like the majority of Christians are not out murdering abortion doctors. It is stupid and bigoted to oppose building mosques here in the US. This country was founded on religious freedom and not just for the set of beliefs we hold. There are at least a few million muslim citizens in the US and they deserve to be able to worship the way they choose. Even the Pentagon has a mosque. There is no reason not to build a mosque near the site of the old World Trade Center. I think everyone who has an opinion on this issue should watch Mayor Bloomberg's speech about the issue. It is fantastic. YouTube - ‪Mayor Bloomberg Discusses the Landmarks Preservation Commission Vote On 45-47 Park Place‬‎

Not even close to saying anything about not building mosques here in the US. I am saying it is not appropriate to put one near ground zero.
Yes there are peaceful people and religious freaks on both ends here. The difference is that here you have the peace of mind knowing what ever your religion is here you can go out in public and tell others about your beliefs without the fear of being killed. Try doing that were our service members are in combat and you see what happens.............

Argue all you want about peaceful relations. It is a slap in the face to even consider putting a mosque near ground zero!

The fact that they want to put it there just seems ridiculous to me.

Why cant they just put it somewhere else?

Because it's fully within their rights to do so?

So since these places are so bad, you are openly suggesting we emulate them?

How does that make sense to you?

If it is indeed a few blocks removed from the WTC site, then I would say that it's not exactly a slap in the face, just another religious assembly. My original understanding was that it was to be placed AT ground zero, which was absolutely baffling to me.
I don't think that there's much that can be done to stop it without violating civil rights, but it seems like that particular mosque would be a big target for hate crimes. Looking at the bare patch where two columns of American industry, and thousands of our citizens were cut down, isn't likely to make many of us run to the nearest mosque to praise Allah.

They want to build an Islamic Cultural Center and mosque in Manhattan. How much real estate do you think is available in Manhattan? There is nothing inappropriate about building the Cordoba Center two blocks away from the former site of the World Trade Center. Many muslims died in the 9/11 attacks including brave first responders.

Quote:
Imagine being the family of Salman Hamdani. The 23-year-old New York City police cadet was a part-time ambulance driver, incoming medical student, and devout Muslim. When he disappeared on September 11, law enforcement officials came to his family, seeking him for questioning in relation to the terrorist attacks. They allegedly believed he was somehow involved. His whereabouts were undetermined for over six months, until his remains were finally identified. He was found near the North Tower, with his EMT medical bag beside him, presumably doing everything he could to help those in need. His family could finally rest, knowing that he died the hero they always knew him to be.
Why shouldn't a Islamic Cultural Center and Mosque be built near where this brave young man died?
