Seth, what do you recommend for females that were imported that are clearly heavily gravid. Should we condition first or try to breed them without conditioning?

My first question would be what makes you think they are heavily gravid? If they are in good condition they are naturally quite plump. I have never noticed a significant difference in size between a conditioned female that was ready to lay eggs and a well fed female that was not. They are pretty fat year round. Secondly, even if they are carrying eggs, and that would be difficult to know, I wouldn't personally do anything about it since egg binding isn't a problem. If I thought I had full adults in good condition I might try to breed them in a few months at the earliest but I would make sure they were all doing well and had settled down first.

Personally, out of this importation I have yet to see a female big enough to lay eggs anyway. They all seem to be juveniles or sub-adults. The largest adult females I had before were about 40mm and nearly twice as big body mass wise compared any of the 7 I ended up with this time. They are around 25mm or less. From what I have seen in the pic's others posted from this importation the ones I got seem about par size wise. Most of them probably need good feeding and at least a year or so to grow up even though the males may be chirping a little.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. Of the group that I received a few that were more rotund than the others (though the same SVL) and continue to increase in girth (while the others are pretty static). But you are correct in that I'm assuming that they are gravid.

I am not sure what SVL yours are, but before I never had a female of less than 35mm lay eggs. I am not sure if that is a minimum breeding size for females or not, but I do know that I tried with two different females when they were around 30mm and didn't have any luck but was successful with them later when they were bigger. Likewise males would chirp a bit from around 20mm but wouldn't clasp unless they were around 30mm or so.

Seems that this import consisted of.

bbtoads.
tricolor hogs
budgetts frogs.

The climate data is interesting in that people usually reccomend budgetts be kept at about 80 degrees. Seems to suggest they would be ok with quite a bit cooler than that. Anyone have experience and care to offer?

More than that, it was the full complement of what was coming in from Paraguay before the imports stopped in 2004. Rococo toads, mullers termite frogs, various tree frogs etc.

As I understand it they come from the chaco region which stays warmer. Never worked with them myself though.

Wow...th mullers termites sure are something! I don't think many people will succeed with them though(lots and lots of small food items) not to mention they are probably not the most interactive of captives.

Another shipment of Bumble Bee toads have come in from Paraguay. I ordered antoher 12 hoping there might be something different in this group. More ads on Kingsnake.com but I'm getting mine from Strickly Reptiles.
