Default Nikon Coolpix camera

I decided my Xmas present to myself this year is going to be a nice point and shoot digital camera with a good macro setting. From the research and reading I've been doing the Nikon Coolpix line has the best macro performance of the point and shoot style digital cameras. Their top models in this line are their P3 & P4. I was wondering if anybody has either of these models and what your impressions of the camera are.

Also, who has the best prices on cameras?

Thanks.

How about comments on the Coolpix line in general. How do you like the close-up pics of your frogs with any of the cameras from the Coolpix line?

Thanks.

I have a cool pix. Its a great camera, but isnt the best for macro. The image always comes out just a bit blurred even when I use the timer and a tripod. Its a great camera to have with you on a daily basis just incase you come across something you wanna take a picture of. You know, passing hawk, a flower, your frogs, or a car accident(God forbid). But I wanna be able to take higher quality pics, so I am currently looking at SLR's.

Hi Gary:

I have this Nikon CoolPix (last year's model):
http://www.nikonusa.com/template.php?ca ... ctNr=25518 I liked it a lot but things such as very delayed shutter after depressign the trigger, long refresh rate after taking a picture, non-rechargable batteries, small LCD, and now my lens motor (opens and closes lens) is failing. I have now bought this Canon camera and love it. It is hard to take a macro without blur if you don't fork out the extra dough for the next model up with Image Stabilizer but it is much better than my Nikon. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contr ... elid=12956

I have seen adds for the new CoolPix that you are talking about and they do appear to be much imporved over the model (CoolPix 3200) I own.

Thanks Rob - I think I just found my wife's "main" Christmas present.

I've got a Canon now - and like it quite a bit. She really needs her own camera.

This is it.

Scott-

Make sure to buy this to protect that big LCD
http://www.shieldzone.com/item_descript ... SD630.html

It is defiantly worth the $9.95 and is practically invisable. Highly, highly recommended. Also, buy a case because this camera does not come with one.

Cheers!

Well, Gary, to answer your original question, I have a Coolpix 3100 that is at least a couple years old now and so obsolete in digi terms! Still, I've been very happy with its macro capabilities. I don't know how my experience compares with other, later models, though.

Thanks Diane.

From the few negatives Rob mentioned I've been looking a little into the Canon Powershot series that Rob likes better. I've kind of got my eye on this model.
