Don't you have to take them to an airport serviced by Delta? This would exclude alot of people......

Zoos have moved to using Fed Ex for amphibians and other small non-venomous taxa.. Larger animals and venomous obviously have to go by cargo frieght but on a cost effective basis, other shippers can be more economical (once you fold in employees having to pick them up).
I have to add, that I've had stuff shipped cargo (and in the next couple of weeks expect to have a dog shipped that way..)

Re: Two Different Shipping Carriers, Two Screw Ups, On THE SAME DAY!
Sorry to hear of your delays, glad to hear they arrived healthy.
FedEx does not offer shipping refunds on live reptile shipments. You specifically waive refund and adjustment rights when you accept the TOS of the FedEx Reptile Shipping Certification.
If you are shipping on your own FedEx account, you are SOL when it comes to on-time refunds.
We started the ShipYourReptiles Live Arrival Insurance program to address this need. Minimum insurance covers you for your shipping cost, and Live Arrival Insurance is available up to $3000 on the site, and up to $10,000 by special arrangement through me directly.
Another interesting insurance detail that is misunderstood is Delta Air Freight "declared value". It used to be insurance, a decade ago, but it has been changed to "declared value" and has no insurance function, or payout, any longer. They keep duping folks into paying for "declared value" fees with no promise or intention of paying any loss claims.
You can insure your live shipments with ShipYourReptiles, no one else offers live arrival insurance. It is your best bet on protecting the value of your animals and shipments.
While the odds are with you for on-time healthy delivery, these types of delays and chaos do happen. Glad to hear of the positive result.

Re: Two Different Shipping Carriers, Two Screw Ups, On THE SAME DAY!
I had a similar issue with FedEx. The issue is the package has to go through one of their hubs. The nearest one, in my case (San Antonio, TX) is in Memphis, TN. So if I ship a package to Houston, about 2.5 hours away, it has to go to Memphis first. If I ship to California, it goes about 1000 miles east, before it heads out west. Seems like a hole in the system because that introduces a lot of room for error.
I use USPS a lot and have never had issues. Like Cairo said, you need to make sure you get a quote from their website first, to make sure they can deliver within 24 hours. Usually rural areas dont offer overnight service.

If you ship with any carrier you will sooner or later have one or more issues.. I have had multiple things shipped via USPS and only once to date has thier tracking been updated before I get the package. The one time it was updated before the package arrived was because the package disappeared into the USPS hub in Philadelphia and didn't arrive until more than a month and a half later. I have to say that I have had more problems with USPS delivery than I have ever had with fed ex and UPS combined...
With respect to why the package may move in a different direction is logistics.. it makes much more sense to ship the package to a hub where it can then be combined with enough packages to make it economical to get to the destination..other wise they would have to pass along the costs of shipping from using carriers or trucks that have less than the breakeven loads...

Re: Two Different Shipping Carriers, Two Screw Ups, On THE SAME DAY!
Just last week I received a box via UPS with a broken Exo Terra terrarium inside. They must have really smashed the box good because the tank was nested inside three different boxes with about 8" of padding all the way around. A couple days later one of my buyers received a box via USPS that had had a bunch of small orchids inside, but he got it empty and crushed as though it had been run over.
