Hi Derek

Along with all the other energy saving tips, try running your A/C at 76-77F day and night. Put a small 12" fan in your bedrooms for sleeping. I think you will be surprsed how much your bill will drop. Let us know

I have been running the a/c more often myself, but mainly for my frogs. I have thought about investing in a portable A/C unit or a swamp cooler. From what I hear the swamp coolers work well and costs less to run than a portable a/c unit. I keep my a/c at 76-77 all day and at night open windows and put the fans on. The temp in my Viv's on a constant basis is 77-80 during the day and 75-77 at night sometimes 78. I also Mist 2 times a day witch also may help with dropping temp a degree or so.

Just another idea, my wife and I kill all the surge protectors (especially the TV and cable box)before we go to work in the morning. No sense in paying for all that crap if no-one's home. And I've noticed it's much cooler as well. Good luck w/ the endeavor Derek.

I'm not sure if misting with cool water really does much different then any other temp. The droplets are so small that they are going to cool or warm to whatever room temp allows it to pretty rapidly. I think more than anything, the opening of the viv to mist cools it more than the mist itself.

Doesn't killing the surge protector allow the spike to get through? I am probably confused.

79? that seems pretty high if you are using sealed vivs with the lights on. and depending on the height of the tanks this could be an issue. my vivs maintain a temp about 3-4 degrees hotter during the day. i leave my AC at between 70-73 which in turn makes my vivs stay at between 73-78 depending on the height of the tank.

if you are really concerned about the electric bill, try cooling the frogs and not the whole house. i am moving soon and have purchased a window AC unit, this way i can use that (not in a window, but rather circulating the air throughout the room) to cool the room the frogs are in , and leave the rest of the house at a much higher temp that myself , and my wallet can handle. this of course works only if they are in a room that can be closed off from the rest of the house (with a door)

james

also while many have reported a drop in temps just after misting, i believe that the temps over the long run may be higher if misted too frequently. keeping humidity VERY high may keep temps higher. dont quote me on that but it is a suspicion i have been having for awhile.
