Re: offshoot from auratus thread (luec)
Jason,
I did not read the auratus thread so If I am off the mark then just ignore me.
Luecomelas have been well established in the hobby since very early on, and there weren't any "morphs" of luecs, not even fine spots. We didn't have morphs of tincts back then, there were only cobalts, followed by powder blues but that is it.
Some people started breeding luecs by color and spotting. So there were orange luecs and yellow luecs. Normal markings and fine spot. I have kept all of these "types" and none of them breed true 100%. Probably because none of them were from one import or one source to begin with.
Not a lot of importations have come in over the years, I've seen a few in the later 80s but most of those frogs were ugly in comparison to what was already here in the states. One shipment was heavy black banding and a faded yellow color, pretty bland. Plus luecs have never been very expensive for cb, so it didn't make much sense to import them.
The green/blue footed luecs are differant but really not any others in the US. Unless you count the recent importations.
One other thing to consider with the recent importations is some of them have had a major die off, which we are not accustomed to with luecs. They are considered the best choice for a first frog, and a lot of that is attributed to there staying power in the hobby without new importations. Just a solid frog.
So that is why there is free rein in breeding luecs with one another in a nut shell. For whatever nutshells are worth these days.
