I had 3 blue dart frogs in a planted, 72 gal vivarium, for approximately 1 year, without any problems. Over the past few weeks, they disappeared, one at a time. I never saw dead bodies, I would just stop seeing them. The day before the last one went missing, he looked healthy as could be and was eating very well. I would really like to try again, but want to correct an issues first. My first thought is that the temp in the tank changed too rapidly although it never got above 82. We have a wood stove that we sometime let go out, so the room temp will dip into the low 60, then when we start the stove the room heats up very quickly.
My second thought is that I got lazy with the supplements although they were extremely well fed. Seems hard to believe that they would appear very healthy one day, and dead they next from lack of vitamin supplements. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
So sorry to hear you are having trouble. So you never saw them looking unhealthy before they disappeared? Something doesn't sound right here. Is there any chance at all that they are still in the tank? Maybe, if the temps are swinging like you say they are, they could have been digging themselves into the substrate or hiding elsewhere to stay warm? There are times of the year when I won't see some of my frogs for months at a time. Then, when the weather changes, they will be out and about like nothing happened. The other thing I can think of is that maybe there is a gap somewhere that they could fit through and they escaped. If they are, indeed, gone, be sure to work out the temperature swings before you put any other frogs in there. If you do find bodies, I would bring them in to a vet to see what may have killed them, too.
Wow! I would be absolutely thrilled if they suddenly appeared after months. There is no chance that they escaped. The tank is water tight. And no, not a single one appeared sick in the least before disappearing. The tank is heavily planted, so it is possible that bodies decomposed before I found them. Keeping my fingers crossed that they reappear.
I agree it's not a good sign, but there are frogs in my tanks that I don't see for weeks or months at a time. My azureus froglets, in fact, will sometimes disappear for long periods of time. Don't give up on them yet. The fact that you haven't seen (or smelled?) the dead bodies of frogs that size might be a good sign. You never know...
Not too much, to be honest. Prior to their disappearance, they were out and about all of the time. Strange, but I thought I remembered seeing one of the missing ones about a week ago. Then, I seriously thought it was a dream... until you said that your frog sometimes disappear for months. There was very likely some wine involved in this sighting though.
They can squeeze into the tiniest crevasse. I once had 4 Costa Rican Auratus that I never saw. Took the tank apart because I thought they were not there. All 4 were hiding in a spot in the background the size of a golf ball.
blue frogs so they are Azureus? Azureus are pretty bold. If you have Auratus then I would understand them hiding. They are a shy species.
Do you not know what kind they are?
