cardboard egg insulation
OK, have had my Iso cultures going for awhile and its time to move them into larger quarters. I've been using cuts squares of plain brown cardboard as a partial medium they both eat and climb on (on top of a soil mix). What I'd liek to use now, is the grey sheets of carboard that insulate eggs in large boxes. You usually see them in pet store used in the cricket tanks. I'm talking about sheets of this stuff like 12 x 12, not the little retail ones at the grocery store than hold a dozen eggs. I'm thinking a bakery, but I dunno....any ideas?

Re: cardboard egg insulation
Josh's has them - I wouldnt get them when they have already been used, you dont know if they have been treated for anything, or what they have been exposed to. They are pretty cheap from Josh, and even using in an Iso culture should last a couple months at a time.
They are actually used as packaging, so if you wanted them in bulk, but you are talking I think 50-100 at at time for a minimum order which might last you an eternity depending on how many cultures you have.

Re: cardboard egg insulation
Yes, but I'm sure this stuff can be found for free right?

Re: cardboard egg insulation
All I can find at josh's is the cricket "kit" that includes these. I'm pretty confident that if they've only been used for eggs they should be clean....think food grade. I think eggs are washed in a solution to kill salmonela, but then rinsed with water. Either way.....I'll stick to plain brown cardboard before I pay for something I can obtain free.

Re: cardboard egg insulation
Oh, thats not a bad idea. You'd have all the local small scale egg producers (hobbyists) that have to get this stuff somewhere. I think we have a tractor supply nearby. Or maybe a poultry supply kinda place?

Re: cardboard egg insulation
Any big breakfast resturant will have a lot, or try a buffet. I have a neighbor that works at a buffet and he brings me about 3 dozen or so every few weeks.

IF you're going to get these from anywhere, make sure they have not been used before. That's a great way to spread disease. If they've been used, there's always a chance of salmonella. That's why any reputable place that sells them will only sell brand new ones.
Here's the link for them sold on Josh's Frogs:
