Default Specific food for specific PDFs

One thing I have not seen posted, unless I missed it, is specific foods for specific PDFs. Over the years, at least with my PDFs anyway, I have noticed certain frogs eat certain things. Here is what I've noticed with the certain species I have had:

Azureus: eat only FFs. I have tried pinheads. He would grab it only to spit it out even though it was clearly small enough for him to eat.

Campana Auturus/G & B Auturus (Panama/Costa Rican): same thing as Azureus.

Phyllobates Aurotaenia/Terribilis: eat both pinheads and FFs as well as small regular crickets.

Imitator Intermedius: only FFs.

Also I have noticed that Panama G&B, Azureus, & Phyllobates are voracious eaters, while Campana/Costa Rican Auturus & Imitator are light eaters. Any comments or anything would be appreaciated.

My azureus enthusiastically eat pinhead crickets.

I've also thrown in the odd insect that has invaded my house, that was also greeted with open arms  so to speak.

I use 10 day old crickets exclusively with azureus at work.

Eating response can depend on a # of things. Temps, sex ratio and size, #`s / tank and tank size and cover, size of prey or amt fed when feeding and frequency of feeding, parasites and stress can all affect appetites. Certain animals can also have individual preferences to certain food items.
Terribilis usually grow to ignore springs and most of my terribilis ignore ff`s after about 1/2 to 3/4 grown and only go for 1/4 to 1/2 inch crix or similar food items. I feed enough big items that they don`t bother w/ ff`s while others feed their terribilis only ff`s. not to say they wouldn`t go for crix as I recieved an adult group only fed ff`s and they devoured every cricket thrown in since and don`t really bother much for flies anymore.
Oh, I forgot, and if you dust too much eventually they`ll start spitting them out and if they stop moving and die in place your juvi frogs won`t eat much. So over dusting, w/ some supplements, can result in spit out flies and eventually a skinny or dead frog.

So maybe its my azureus. I've had him for about 3 or 4 years now. He is happy and healthy. Maybe he's just picky. I admit I haven't tried pinheads in a while b/c the last time I tried them, I only had a few frogs at the time and ended up with 900 pinheads that I couldn't use that eventually turned to cricket dust.

Update: I tried pinheads and they all ate them. Maybe the last time I tried giving them pinheads my PDFs were babies and didn't like them, I don't know. I'll continue using FFs and occasionally give them pinheads as a treat. Thanks for the input.

I have seen similar response from my frogs when I started feeding termites. At first they would eat and spit them out. After a few attempts they now all eat every single termite I throw in. I guess it takes them a little time to get used to the new texture / flavor.

My azureus eat termites with great relish. Yesterday, I saw one eating 2 at a time.

My personal exeperiences... there are certain size preferences for certain species/groups of frogs but there is also an amount of it that is just what they are used to. The tinc group has a particular preference for smaller stuff for their size... but that's not to say they won't eat the larger stuff if exposed to it regularly.

Dendrobates - smallest foods for their sizes, tho I will admit the smaller the frog the less picky the size preference IMO. I feed my frogs a variety from a young age, and they will end up eating anything I toss in the tank, but I do notice preferences. Especially bowl feeding... if it twitches, they shall find a way to shove it in their mouths.

Thumbnails - small foods purely only for small size...they will eat stuff pretty large for their size!

Eggfeeders - ok, just pumilio... they don't realize they are a small frog.

Epipedobates/Phyllobates/Cryptophyllobates... everything else... like big stuff up to about the size between their eyes. Well, ok, maybe bigger but that's the size I limit them too. Waxmoths, decent sized waxworms, half grown crickets, etc. These are the most likely to take the largest variety of types and sizes... stuff other frogs would baulk at these guys tank with no issues (like funny feeling roaches tincs get weirded out by).

I don't know any PDF that would turn down termites.
