purging old/un-useful threads

It may not be cost effective, unless you get a volunteer, but there are many many pages of un-useful threads/threads where questions were asked and no one ever replied, tons of posts that mean nothing (Nice Tank!, etc.) that could be removed. there's also many ways things could be subdivided into topics.

Yes there are but everyone has a different perspective. Nearly every post on facebook and twitter are useless and they are rather successful.
