Default Re: Sticky for Sending Fecals for Examination

One of the reasons fecals are preformed while in quarantine (vital) before , before adding frogs to a viv is that it is much easier to collect fresh fecals while in a smaller tub. Another is that once the frogs are in-viv the viv is permanently contaminated in many cases (until broke down) if the frogs are diseased. I personally collect poopp from captured frogs when needed to ensure freshness. But an in-viv dried out ,vs. fresh, moist log is not that hard to tell apart.
I'll ask my brother about input on how to ship pertaining to temps, insulation and such. I think with that info we should be good to go on written info for collecting a few poop samples and mailing them out.
If someone would like to grab a camera and whip out pics of a box with film can/baggies, baggie/can with paper towel, and a plastic knife scraping poop, we should be all set. Oh, and a few different looking poop samples.

I don't think this;
"For additional information regarding when to test, if one should test, how often to test, and recommendations from ASN see these links below. Additional information can be obtained using the search feature of this forum browser.
[add links here. Need to search, and select] "
is needed to go forward. Maybe nice to read later, but certainly not needed. I plan to start a thread later this week on when and why to test, but again, not needed in this caresheet alone.

Just got off the phone with my brother. He said that he has never had an issue with fecals being frozen during winter shipping. "Cooked during hot months has not been an issue either. They should be shipped overnight and that may be the reason. I'd say that whenever shipped it would be a good idea to at least wrap some form of insulation around the baggie or film can , but going to great effort to insulate may be more trouble than it is worth.

I didn't take pictures but I put my new terribilis poops in a ziplock baggie along with a moist paper towel, wrote my information on the outside of the baggie with a sharpie so Dr. Frye's staff could call with the results, and used one of the post offices bubble lined envelopes to mail it in. They arrived just fine and the temps got down to 33 here last night.

I just put on rubber gloves and picked up the poops with my hands and put them in the bag with the paper towel.

It means that we were looking for pics of the collection prosses, fecal matter, and shipping containers. No?

I took it as you were implying they were doing something wrong.

Not to hijack but I just wanted to say for those of you who don't know Rich he has strong opinions and is not shy about sharing them. He also has a great deal of experience and the benefit of a medically trained brother who is a vet.

I have had healthy "debates" with him and greatly respect his views.

Sometimes his posts come off a little harsh but I think I am speaking correctly for him that none of his comments are meant to be personal or demeaning.

Sorry to interrupt but wanted to make sure the integrity of the topic isn't hindered by any misunderstandings....

Nah, I didn't take it as anything other than a "Aww darn, pics would have been great so we could wrap up this thread and get the sticky under way". I would have taken pictures had the suggestion been made the day before when I was getting the samples ready for shipping.
