Just curious if this is a typo or not, since we're only a couple of days into 2012.

Good question Vic. What if we made our viv in late 2011?

Its almost impossible to create a well grown in viv worthy of 1st place in under 2 months. Gotta be a typo.

For the most part it will just be a plan bg because nothing will really grow in within 2 months. I agree with Grimm.

I'm open to options but to make it fair it should be a recent build. Remember this stemmed from people requesting a monthly contest and now we want it to run longer?

I have a though im just throwing out but we could have everybody create a viv and summit in a certain time frame then everybody could be givin a 2 month period to let thier viv grow in while another viv of the month contest starts. so we would have a viv posted on a home page every month and the vivs would have a reasonalble amount of time to grow in.

Just my thought

In my opinion any vivarium should be able to be entered in the contest, whether it was built 5 years ago or 2 days before the submission deadline (although I wouldn't vote for a 2 day old vivarium haha).

I feel as though 2 months is more than sufficient for a grow-in period. The contest is for the first vivariums of 2012. If you cannot produce a decent looking vivarium without letting your plants grow for half a year, maybe this contest isn't for you. Besides, Kyle said he would make exceptions within reason, so I'm sure there will be some leeway.

Would a tank really grow-in in 2 months? Especially if one is using cuttings.

I think 2 months is very limiting it forces you to spend a ton of money to plant it so it looks full and in the long run it won't be good for the tank because a lot of plants do better of they are allowed to grow into their location, I'm building a vivariums full of aroids and the ones I'm choosing may produce only a couple leaves a month so it's going to take a few months to start filling in even a little. I think a monthly contest is still a good idea and why wouldnt someone be able to submit every month the key is limiting people to one win

My $.02-the key and most important aspect to a well-designed and successful vivarium is sustainability. A lot of folks can put together a viv that will look great for the first few weeks or even months, but many times that same environment will look terrible over time due to poor plant choices/placement and inadequate environmental controls. Over the years, we've seen this time and time again- new hobbyists spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on orchids and rare epiphytes only to have them melt away and subsequently be taken over by Ficus 6 months in.

Frankly, many times a vivarium doesn't start looking close to its potential until at least 3 months into its evolution.

For the reasons listed above, I would suggest a minimum amount of time that the vivarium needs to be set up prior to being entered.

Cheers,

Dave

I'd prefer that we only looked at established vivs to be honest. I set mine up in June of last year and I wouldn't consider it even remotely established yet.

I know you can't make everyone happy with these types of contests, but I would suggest just not having a time frame that they had to be built. That allows for anyone to have a chance.

Or do categories. This first one. Builds done in 2012. The next one builds between 6mo-1 year. Etc

Anyone can enter but you can only win once a year.

Should also consider parameters that will be judged per contest like new builds can't be expected to be a lush wonderland (not for a reasonable cost) for its inhabitants. Judging based on background creativity, execution, layout and planning for grow in and asthetics.

I have a viv from mid 2010 and I feel it just begins to grow in.
i really can't believe a viv is grow in in about 2 months. The best vivs are more than a year to reach its full potential.
Why not let everybody enter this contest? I bet there will be very nice 'old' vivs.

If you limit it to 2 months you will get display vivs being built like they do for shows, no intention on keeping them going just trying to look good for a short period, when I first started in te hobby many years ago I made this mistake I wanted it to look good so I fully planted it over time the plants that liked the conditions took over an the others died off and it didn't look nearly as good.

Im sure Kyle is getting frustrated lol. There is no pleasing everyone, but if you look on the bright side there seems to be way more interest and discussion concerning this contest. Thats always the best way to bring out the best in people and to get the most submissions.

I could care less about winning a prize worth less then 10% of the build costs. I like the competition and trying to come up with new ideas using other peoples builds as inspiration.

I agree. I don't feel the need there should be any prize to win.
But if it encourages people that normally don't post pics of their viv than we could expect to see some that we haven't seen before.

I'm open to extending the window, but this proves my point from the other thread that a monthly contest would be way too frequent. We could extend the time to 3-4 months.

I like the ideas on sustainability and how they grow in but that can take a year. If we went with established tanks it maybe hard to ever get build details which seems to be a popular request.

Its all just for fun, I dont think everyone displays there work. The gallery is empty. Like I said before, there are 2 types of people in the hobby, people that are more for the frogs, and others that like the frogs but love to build vivs.

I am new to Dendroboards but I am not new to building Vivariumís, I have been a builder since 1976 and have just started adding poison dart frogs maybe about12 years ago. I have been working on building my vivs for the frogs now and it has been quite challenging, it is awesome to finish one and just look back. I would love to share information, not so much the how too, which I do want to hear about. But the why I did it this way, this is what I would like to hear about, to include pictures of course. I like to see how long I can get them to last with the minimum amount of maintenance my personal best is the one I have marked my oldest and that was done in 2001, I use it now to rear the young frogs. My newest viv is also posted, I would love to talk about the plants chosen, the substrates used, and anything else one would like to talk about building that perfect Vivarium.
I donít check the board daily because I am a student at ITT and homework comes first but I will answer anyone that writes I would love to hear about some new ways to make my frogs more comfortable.
Thanks for your ear,
Bill Hodapp

Everyone judges on personal preferences regardless of how told to vote in regards for what to look for..

But back to the Original Question..

I think I'm confused. I just don't see how having a specific window of time it had to be built helps the contest in any way.

I know you can't please everyone, but I look at a contest like this as an attempt to bring out the very best vivs that have ever been produced by the dendroboard community. I want to see the best of the best, and IMO you won't see any of those pop up if you only give them a window of time that they had to have been built by. If people want to build a new viv just to enter, awesome. They could still do that. That's just not at all what I'm interested in seeing.

Just throwing this out there, but I think the best contest to take a template from is the yearly AGA Aquascaping contest ( 2011 AGA Aquascaping Contest ) Not only do they allow tanks of any age/size, but they let the same tanks be submitted again if they have grown in better since the previous year. Obviously they have way more entrants and can make seperate size categories, but maybe down the road we can do the same. All they require is at least one main frontal picture, and some additional tank info.

The quality of their contests and submissions definitely make me want to start aquascaping, or at the very least make a paludarium to submit for next year. Whos to say a dendroboard contest wont increase our hobby's popularity by drawing in similar hobbyists?

Here is my $.02 worth. I have a 55 gal horz that I built this time 2011. I am in the process of building a 20 gal vert right now. I will finish this one before march. Do I think it will be grown in. No. Will I be willing to submitt it. Sure. Just because it will not grown in does not mean that I will not be proud of the build.

Let's not make this completely a beauty pagent. I for one like to see all the different build styles.

Do I think I will ever build a myian temple viv? What about a true to type cloud forest viv? Maybe maybe not. but I love to look at others designs. might inspire me to try one sometime.

My rambling over. Bring on the contest. I would love to see a whole variety of designs. One and all. The more the merrier.

I'm open to this option but it may turn some people away as there are some people wit established tanks that are amazing.

So the change would be can be an established tank but must be a current picture with proof of your name in the picture?

This would be great, and I think it's mostly agreed upon that the contest should include vivariums of all ages.

I would like to thank the person that came up with this idea of a vivarium contest. And I would like to ask if someone would be so kind as to point me to the page with the rules for size, age what has to reside in it , can it be one of our favorite. Do we have to build one in a given amount of time? When is the dead line? Where do we submit out pictures? I am looking forward to putting my photographic skills to work,as amateur as they are, but it does sound like fun,
I have not been a member very long so if you would please do not tell me I have to post 25 times before I can enter. I love to learn better ways of doing things and I have been building this type of tank set up for a long time and I would like to share what I know has been working for me as well as pick up a thing or two. If anyone would be interested, I would be more that happy to share.
