Default Citronella's transported tads

I was adding water to the pond in my Cirtonella's tank this afternoon and found two tads that have been transported to the pond without my knowledge! I'm gonna leave them there are see what happens.

tincts won't usually feed as well as thumbs so you might want to add some food if you don't see any feeding activity by the parents.

I fed some tad bites and am going to leave them in the tank with their parents and see what happens...it's pretty neat that they still have their "wild" instincts...kinda makes me want to try leaving a clutch in all my tinc tanks.

Hmmmm Julio, I didn't think of that. It's kinda funny because when I peek into the water to look at the tads Dad hops over and stomps around in the water like he doesn't want me to find his babies.

No concern about the parents considering the froglets as food unless the froglets morph out at the size of hydei Keep in mind that tinctorius prefer smaller prey (most will eat up springtails to the exclusion of FFs if given the chance).

Now one could worry about the froglets being trampled or out competed by the parents but I have experienced several situations where the offspring did just fine and I found them in the viv by accident.

BTW if several tads are deposited in the same water source you will eventually only end up with one as they are pretty aggressive towards one another.

I know Tinc tads will not be fed by the parents and should not be kept together, but would you suggest that I take one of the tads out Bill and just leave the other to morph out by itself?

Lisa,

The choice is entirely up to you. Keeping them both in the viv will pretty much ensure that one will become dinner for its sibling. If you are removing one to raise, removing the second is a logical choice. However if you want to compare how the two develop under separate conditions, one hand reared and the other viv raised that would be an interesting experiment.

It is likely however that given that your frogs are proven transporters that they will be bringing more tads to the water. If you leave one of the siblings in there the later deposited tads will become snacks for the older and more developed tadpole.

If you do choose to remove one or more tads, make sure that you allow them to temperature equilibrate prior to adding to another container with water. Otherwise they can be shocked like fish can become by sudden temperature change.

Two ways to achieve this - the first is to remove their water container and let it sit for several hours at room temperature and the second is to place a container with water in the viv to allow it to reach viv temp for placing the tadpole into for removal.

Good luck.

Bill

I didn't even think of doing a hand reared vs. parent reared experiment! That is a great idea...maybe I could create a journal of it! Thanks Bill!
