1. Thanks to everyone who has purchased. I seriously thought I would sell 20 books but the first order (sponsor cycle) from this site exceeded that.

2. The number of hobbyist purchasing outside of here on Borders, B&N, and Amazon is interesting. I am making some assumptions but buying from me is typically the same price as them. If those purchases are from those not on the forum there are a lot of people interested, just not on the forums.

Thanks to everyone!

Didn"t know the sex. But I do know now I have one male in the group. I wasn"t sure what it was at first because I was watching tv. But then I turned the tv down and it was the frog at the top of the tank calling. They r about 8 mths old now.. Sounds like a male canary singing. I used to have them years ago . Now what ? I have brooms in the tank with water in them. Should I put a small dish in the tank just incase.?

With some Weld-On 16, and super glue I have again fixed the acrylic cube that has given me so many woes over the years. After draining all the water, I took a control screw driver and separated the leaking edge and forced some Weld-On 16 into the edge. I then examined the edge and any bubbles in the weld i dabbed a small amount of super glue on. Yes it looks like hell if you examine it close. However, I think I have finally beat the leaking water.

My wife and I went to this expo yesterday. We got three imitators there. I am kind of surprised how much these little guys are out. They spend a lot of time in plane open sight hopping around the top and middle of the viv. I see them way more than my Auratus.

The expo was ok there was only one vendor with darts there. I guess there was supposed to be two and the other vendor had a heater malfunction that killed all its snakes. I have said this before and I will say this again. Put your heaters on a controller of some kind folks! Don't trust your precious livestock to the thermostat in a $20 to $60 heater. There are plenty of products with thermo probes that will turn the heater on and off. I recently had a friend loose thousands of dollars worth of salt water live stock to a heater sticking on and cooking them. I have seen all types of fish, reptiles, and amphibians killed because of various heaters. From cheap to insanely expensive I have seen them all fail over the years, don't trust them.

Anyway the expo was good, there defiantly wasn't enough selection there. It was packed with people. If you were looking for a ball python, gecko, or corn snake there were plenty of them to be had. There were small amounts of everything else. I have been on the look out for a emerald python and there were about three of them there and all hundreds over market value. There were some deals there you just had to hunt for them. We defiantly got a fair price on our imis.

DIY, 5mm LED moonlights

First of all most of this will be carried over from some posts I made about six months agao on my local reef clubs forum but all this can be applied...

First of all most of this will be carried over from some posts I made about six months agao on my local reef clubs forum but all this can be applied to dart fanatics that want to add moon lighting to their cages. Chances are you will not want more than a couple LEDs per enclosure but those of you that have multiple enclosures in a close proximity can use the same power source for many LEDs.

Here is what you will need to get your project started.

1. An old cell phone charger.
2. Some 5mm LEDs.
3. Some 14 or 18 AWG wire.*
4. Some super glue or silicone adhesive.
5. A strip of 1/8" thick acrylic or aluminum.**
6. Wire Connectors. Push-in or crimp on work best. Wire-nuts work but are a PITA. Or good soldering skills.
7. Possibly some resistors.

*Cat 5, lamp cord, landscaping cable all work. It will only be carrying around 5 to 12V.

**Something that won't corrode in a damp environment. That you can mount your LEDs to.

Tools you will need.

1. Drill
2. 11/64ths drill bit. (I will correct if this is wrong but I think this is the closest size I found to a 5mm led.)
3. Wire Strippers.
4. Razor Knife.

Here is a cell charger...

Two things to note here are the output voltage and the current it is limited to. This particular charger is 5V / 550mA. This will determine the resistors that need to be used and the maximum amount of LEDs that can be powered. LEDs require that the current going through them be limited and are rated by the maximum amount of current they can safely carry before they burn up. Most 5mm LEDs are rated at 20mA. So by looking at this charger and it's 550mA rating we can see that 550/20 = ~27 LEDs can be lit with this adapter. Now being that a cell charger is a current limiting device placing 28 LEDs on it will not cause it any harm it will just cause the emitters to be lit more dim.

Ok enough talk on chargers, now decide how many LEDs you want to light and go to a website with a calculator on it such as this one...http://www.led-calculator.com/?betri...4&led_strom=20
This will tell you when you enter your supply voltage and number of LEDs what your resistor value should be. When purchasing resistors try and always over rate the wattage portion. For example if the calculator recomends 1/8th Watt go ahead and purchase 1/4 or 1/3 this value just determines the amount of abuse the resistor can take.

For our hypothetical scenario the calculator has told us we need an 82 Ohm resistor with a minimum of 1/8th Watt rating. Time to hunt something close down. No need to get exact.
http://www.mouser.com/Search/Product...uKuTdu9hjL4%3d
Here is a nice 82 Ohm 1/4W resistor. $0.06 its darn cheap as well.

While at Mouser I may as well order some LEDs. Blues, Purples, and Pinks tend to look the most natural. On rare occasion you can also find black but not often. You want to start your search here...
http://www.mouser.com/search/Refine.aspx?N=254249
Limit your search paramiters to "through hole" and then select colors you wish to look for.
http://www.mouser.com/Search/Product...h26DRu2oCQM%3dThis is a blue with a nice viewing angle.

LEDs have polarity. That is the current can only flow one direction through them and most of the time wiring them backwards does nothing but if enough voltage is applied in reverse backwards it can ruin them. One leg on every emitter is shorter than the other. That leg is your negative. While wiring your moonlights make sure that you wire all of them the same way so that you can simply swap the power supply polarity if the LEDs are installed backwards.

This is a set of moonlights I made over a year agao. This December these lights have been burning for 2 years solid, they have never been shut off. There are three colors there. These were for a fish tank, your viv will require much fewer LEDs.

I will continue with a breif instructional on putting the assembly togather in my next post.

I constructed my 60G cube viv out of an acrylic aquarium that had its welds blow out. I re-welded most of it (admittedly I am no good with acrylic and did not build this is the first place.) Then I went ahead and siliconed' the bottom portion just in case. Unfortunately I still have one of the joints leaking a little. It is a very slow drip, but it is warping and staining the custom stand none the less. So I suppose I will be draining the water and applying some more Weld-On #16 to the edge and hopefully that will be the end of that.

Thanx for checking out my blog page. This first post will just be some personal info about myself.

My name is Jessie and I am a commercial and industrial electrician. At the moment I am currently un-employed. Hazard of the trade really, I spend about three to four weeks a year laid off so it is really no big deal I plan well for it. Before I became an electrician I managed pool halls and arcades for eight years (complete nightmare.)

I am a couple hundred hours away from a state Journeyman's electricians license. I also finished my bachelors degree in information technology this year (Yeah for a $50k student loan.) I am now 31 years old and for the first time not in college, thank god. I may go back to learn to weld or something I can utilize outside of work but for the most part my education is done.

Anyway, I intend to repost some of my DIY LED projects from two of my tanks in my blog just to spread the information out to people that may be able to use it and have not seen it yet.

Grad School Update - Almost the Field Season!

I'm in the final stages of preparing for collecting data for my thesis work, and it looks like it's going to be a busy summer! I'm going to have my committee meeting in a couple weeks, but barring any major changes, this is the plan:

The current ideas are to tackle O. pumilio from a variety of fronts. First, I am going to attempt to figure out population sizes and densities for at least twelve populations (currently going to have more, but the populations I'm going to hit, barring changes, will be Colon, Bastimentos, Solarte, Shepherd's, Pelican Key, San Cristobal, Popa North and South, Loma Partida, Cayo de Agua, Aguacate, Robalo, Uyama, Guaramo/Rambala, Chiriqui Grande, Almirante, Valiente, and *possibly* Escudo, so 18 populations right now, but that might change come the committee meeting). That's just this year. I might try to hit other, more remote populations next year depending on what I can collect this year. With any luck, I'll have a ton of data on a ton of different populations.

I'll run 150 meter transects into forest fragments, not only to get ideas on population density, but also to look at fragmentation effects on the frogs (basically, as I go deeper into the forest, will I see changes in frog density?). This should give me excellent data on how frogs are being affected by the massive amount of fragmentation happening in the area. I'm going to try to get some data on the Red Frog Beach project, but we'll see if that happens. That might be pretty iffy since there's all sorts of security there.

I was going to do a limiting resources analysis on 6 populations, but found that that is going to be ridiculously difficult, so I'm just going to manipulate rearing sites and leaf litter on several sites on Colon, to see if I get population responses there. If I do, I can then conclude that one or the other has a significant effect on the frogs and might be able to see if such things are different from population to population. I'll see if I can figure out what the invertebrates are in the leaf litter, and see if there is a relationship there or not.

I'm going to try to assess the impact of the pet trade on the frogs as well. This might be done in the second field season since it seems as though this field season is going to be devoted to transect data. I'll probably interview locals and try to get some data on "frog farms." My professor suggested making a survey for froggers here in the US and Europe to see what sort of demand there is on frogs, so if that's the case, I might be asking froggers to fill out a survey for me.

I've also added a chytrid study to my work. I'm going to try to swab frogs from each of the places so I can get an idea of where chytrid is in the archipelago. There was a recent paper that came out that didn't find any chytrid in pumilio on Bastimentos, which I found surprising, so I'm going to also add in a swab for marine toads (since they're pond breeders), so I can see if pumilio are just behaviorally "resistant" to the disease or if it truly is not there.

Hopefully by the end of it all, I'll be able to say what populations need protection and what populations are doing just fine, and be able to recommend changes to the Panamanian government concerning conservation.

I'm currently filling out my Animal Care and Use forms so that I can do the research, and they had me estimate how many frogs I'm going to be working with, and in doing the math, I estimated that I'd work with 2580 frogs! That was a bit of a shock! By the end of my second season, I might be working with well over 5000 frogs! Pretty insane when you start thinking about it.

My primary concern is getting good data on the river populations (Uyama, Robalo, Guaramo/Rambala) because when you look at the satellite map of them, the area is very fragmented. It's possible that those populations could be wiped out in the next 10 years. Pretty scary thought. Hopefully my research will get the Panamanian government to protect populations or get private individuals to try to protect them and buy land for the frogs.

At the end of the season, on my way back to Panama City, I plan to hit up EVACC and seeing their facility there. I'm very excited about that, not only to make connections, but to see amphibians that I may never get a chance to see in the wild because of chytrid.

Overall, it's going to be an exciting, but busy summer. I'll definitely keep regular updates here when possible. I leave for Panama on May 20 and the field season starts June 13 (first three weeks are with a study abroad). Just about a month away!!!
