Default Hot and Cold

Okay, so I keep Nepenthes in a tropical greenhouse, about 50F night temperatures and 75-85F day temperatures. I keep highland Nepenthes. I was just wondering if I would be able to set up a dart frog terrarium in there without killing the frogs. There have to be some highland dart frogs, what are they? The jungle isn't 80F all the time, so the traditional way of keeping them has to be somewhat unnatural, even though it's easier thank achieving a temperature swing. The humidity is 60-70% during the day and 90% at night, so it would be a mesh top terrarium. So which frogs, if any, would work in my conditions? Or should I just stick with native frogs that would absolutely thrive in these controlled temperatures?

I decided to buy some thumbnails. I'm going to put them in my 10g long in the greenhouse so they'll have tons of room to hop around.

First of all, considering you have been around here for quite a while, I find it strange that you seem to have it in your head that we keep our frogs at a constant temperature of 80f. This is not an accurate assumption at all. Most keepers tend to keep there Ranitomeya (most Dendrobatids infact) at day time temperatures in the higher 70's to 80f. A rule of thumb is to provide a nightime drop in temperature of somewhere around 10f. I personally do not like to see this drop go much lower than 68f especially where young, some what more sensitive froglets are present.

Not trying to put a stick in the works, but I would certainly not keep your frogs inside the greehouse. 50f is way to much of a drop and I shant think your frogs will last very long being subjected to such temperature swings especially if they are of a younger age.

Am I right in presuming you haven't owned any Darts before? I wouldn't have recommended Thumbnails to someone with no Dart experience nor would I frankly recommend any Dart for the application you have planned. I would move the frogs into the house asap and do a good bit more research on here.

Regards,
Richie

I don't know if they tan take it down to 50F, but I'd imagine species found in upper elevations (1200m asl+) would do well with temps down to 60 maybe 55.

I've never tried it, but I do grow upper elevation Neotropical orchids. Those from the above elevations require low night temps to survive.

I haven't brought darts yet. Never owned them. Was planning to get some, but went with local frogs due to money issues, and it didn't work out with my bad setup. I was just trying to elicit a response to a simple question after three days lol.

Guess I won't get darts then, but just so you know, my highland plants (1000m+ elevation) like nights in the 50s and some even into the forties. If they don't get that, they won't do well and will eventually tire out since no rest is signaled. I would think that darts above 1000m would like those temperature in the 50s too... I just don't think its even been done really. I guess most darts are lowland?
