Default First frog is a rescue / first post / first everything!

Hi all!

First a quick intro - I'm Brenna and I think I'm a PDF addict ... or soon will be.

I've been researching frogs for a while and was nearly ready. Today, a PDF 'rescue' was kind of dropped in my lap. OK, I was on Craigslist ... looking.

We were told the frog is about a year old and a Kahlua. S/he/? I think is a D. Auratus Campana we've named Mocha Java Chiller. Java for short.

Java is VERY skinny! The guy pretty much admitted that he hadn't really been taking care of it or getting it the proper food. (Java's tank buddy, evidently a Costa Rican Green and Black died yesterday.) We kept Java in a small Ziploc type container on the drive home with some FF's. Java ate like there would be no more tomorrow. We put Java in the new viv (the old one is nasty and moldy and smelly from 5' away!) and s/he hunted frogs almost immediately, explored the whole tank and seems very happy with the new home.

My question - can they overeat? make themselves sick? should I limit how many FF's I feed so Java can get used to a steadier diet or put more in so s/he can play catch up?

I really hadn't planned on getting a frog till summer, but I couldn't leave Java in those conditions. Please help!

Thanks!

Brenna

D. Auratus Campana (I think) 0.0.1 (i think that's right....)

Start with like ten flies, you never want your frogs overrun with too many flies or they get stressed, but you want just a few more than they can eat to the snack through the day. There was a similar thread on someones craigslist luec a day or two ago, search for it, lots of great information on feeding fly maggots and such to put weight on. Welcome to the addiction.

Hello and welcome! Good eye, finding that frog on craigslist. It drives me crazy when people take awful care of these beautiful herps. It's a good thigh you came across it first, and not somebody who thinks, " Ohhhh, a poison dart frog. Sounds expensive. I could probably sell it for a small fortune." anyway, just to warn you, as soon as that frog is nice and healthy, your going to want another in a few miniuts. As mentioned above, there is a rather recent thread about a leucomelas purchesed on craigslist and all about how to fatten it up.
Here is the link(look on page two for info about feeding maggots): craigslist frog

also how much did you pay for the frog? You don't have to answer if you don't want to.

Thanks for the link and the advice! I'm going to read it right now. I paid $40 for the frog and his exo viv tank. The tank needs tore down and re-done. It's just nasty.

I'm super excited tho - I just fed him and he's out and hopping around. He seems good! Getting supplements is definitely priority!

Yup, vitamin supplements are very importent. What I would do is buy some Repashy vitamin plus, just because he is in such a critical state.

here is another link(I can't promise its going to be my last! ):Repashy Vitamin Supplements | Josh's Frogs

The post was craigslist frog and it was my leuc. Lots of great advice. I tried the film canister idea and he fattened up pretty quick. Best of luck.

Hey Brenna, Max and I are in Colorado. We are in Denver. You should come check out our frog room sometime. Feel free to PM me. We work with mostly thumbnails, though Max has a pair of Giant Reginas and we have some Escudos.
Yes to NOT flooding Java with flies as they can stress her. If you drop a little chunk of banana in the viv, the flies will be attracted to it and gather there, making a convenient feeding station.
Double YES to getting some Repashy Calcium Plus as soon as possible. The Repashy Calcium Plus is the one designed to be a stand alone supplement. The Vitamin Plus doesn't have as much calcium in it.

Hi Doug - I would love to take you up on that, thank you for the invite!! I just wanted to attach a better photo of Java. S/he's so skinny! I was told they thought it's a boy, but you said girl. Can you tell by my bad pics? Need a belly shot if I can get one? Java is about 1" long and supposedly a year old.

No, sorry, I didn't mean anything by calling Java a "her". I don't keep Auratus and will leave sexing to someone more qualified, though I think you'll need to fatten Java up some before people are confident in sexing.
