Default Is there a such thing as to much space?

I went to look at a tank for my first viv today. I pretty much had my mind made up that I wanted to use a 18x18 front opening exo-terra or zoo-med.

Problem is in Denton,Texas there's not a lot of pet stores and they don't have much for herps. They pretty much had two options. The 18x18x25 exoterra starter kit that came with a fake background, fake plants, two real vines, and a lighted hood for $200. Seemed like a lot of money for a small tank and a bunch of fake plants I'm just gonna toss anyway. However, front opening doors and cube design looks awesome.

Then there was a 18x36 basic tank from all living things. It's double the floor space but not as much vertical space. It was $99. It's not as good looking as the cube but for half the price with double the floor space I'm really thinking about it. I would have to buy a light hood for $50.

I plan on having 3 Azureus's. I've been told they don't climb much and make good use of floor space. Would they actually use 648 inches or floorspace? Would they use 25" or vertical space?

All of our tanks are 24"high exo's. We have 18w, 24w, and 36w. We prefer the 24"s of height because you are able to get more plants in there. We feel it makes for a nicer looking background. Also we have some tree frogs and Leucs that use the height and it keeps all the tanks uniform. It's personal preferrence.

Well first off, three azureus once they are no longer juvies could be a real problem. They can be very territorial between animals of the same sex. You might want to either seek another kind of frog, or plan on just getting three, sexing out a pair and then selling the third wheel. Back to the original question though, Yes azureus will use all of the floor space they are given. Mine are out ALL the time hunting every square inch of the viv, vertically as well for anything they can eat. I use standard tanks. The exo-terras i've heard leak flys bad. Just a glass top on a regular tank works great. i made a gap in the back that i siliconed screen into.

As long as you're lucky enough to not have more than one female, you should be fine in a 18x36. However, if you have more than one female, as soon as you can sex them, separate the females.

Thanks for the input Y'all. Yeah I am planning on getting 3 just to increase the chances of getting a sexed pair. If I get lucky and get two males and a female I might try to keep them together. The wife is taking her teachers exam in a few weeks so with a little luck she'll be teaching within the year. So if they are not compatable we are just going to make a smaller viv and take it to school as a classroom pet.

Hey frog freak do you have any pictures of one of your 18w's? It doesn't sound like it give's much room to plant but I know people use them and have happy plants and frogs.

Our 18's house are for tree frogs so they have tall plants that go right to the top. They don't like really high humidity so there are no broms or such in there. Also, the plants are in the substrate. Our Leucs and Mantella's are in the 36's. Our Tincs will be in the 24's (still building these)

Haven't figured out the pic thing yet

The only issue i see with that size tank would be the size of frogs when put in it.
Making sure they are not to small in such a place to find food.
if they are decent size and active, they will find it/hunt it.
Froglets may not have such luck or skill off the bat.
IMO....

Good point

I agree. I wouldn't put a froglet in a 36" tank.
