Default What obligatory egg feeders make the best captives.

I really only want to keep one species of PDF and so something that really interests me. The parental care of the above group does this but im unsure what species do particularly well in captivity?

Any comments?

Cheers.

Do you have any experience with dart frogs? if not I would avoid an obligatory egg feeder as my first darts. But the only species thats generally available and can be easy to care for provided they are captive bred is O. pumilio

Why not some of the non-obligate egg feeders, such as R. imitator? They will raise their own young if allowed to (like O. pumilio), and are much easier to breed, not to mention less expensive.

ventrimaculatus also will raise their young if allowed to.
Breed easily and are a great beginner Ranitomeya.
Imitators are great as well.

Cheers for the info! I thought obligatory egg feeders where the only PDF's that displayed any parental care? I must be wrong..

I am new to amphibs but im a confident reptile keeper, I have been keeping various species over the past 15 years. I know normal protocol would be for me to get a "starter amphib" such as a WTF but I really have little interest in such species.

Could someone post up pics of the two species mentioned other than O. pumilio just to clarify with all the changes in systematics that we are actually talking about the same Genera.

I will read up on these but any aditional info or recomended texts would be also be appreciated. In particular how they raise their young from your experiences
Cheers.

I would highly recommend reading through the care sheets on this forum:

care-sheets

as well as Patrick Nabor's site:

Saurian

Good luck! Welcome to the best hobby/conservation effort on the planet!

If my recollection is right almost any Ranitomeya will raise their own young if given that option (although admittedly, just like pumilios, it may take them several clutches before getting it right). I'd definately get an imitator. You could go with something common like the nominat imitator or something far more rare like the Veradero.

Thanks for your replies guys you have been very helpful despite my lack of experience with amphibians.

I will look into Ranitomeya.

Thanks again!
