Default Transporting

hi,

how if at all can frogs and vivs be transported around?

can the frogs be left in the viv when travelling? and yes this would be for a small enough viv to be able to lift up.

The journey time would be around two hours would this be ok?

what would be the best way to keep the temperatures regular

cheers

matt

how long of a trip is it, if its just a few mils then leave them in there, but if not then put the frogs in containers until you get to your destinations.

I would think that it could be done. I would drain as much water as possible and duct tape the lid shut all the way around. You'd also have to make sure that the tank wasn't exposed to direct sun that could cause it to heat up. Personally I would take the frogs out and keep them in small containers. Takes away the chance that the tank could somehow tip, the lid could come loose, or anything else unexpected due to stopping short etc...

as others said they can be transported SHORT distances in the tanks, but you should be careful because loose items can injure frogs. it takes only one slip and its over. years ago in a non traveling related incident , but one that shows how dangerous moving tanks and equipment can be, a friend of mine knocked one of those old 3peice hoods into a bluejeans tank hitting a piece of driftwood that the females leg was under in-turn breaking it and rendering her incapable of eating. it is up to your judgment and comfort factor. for long travels i use the critter carriers available at p__supermarket. they are FF proof and hold in humidity well, (making them good for really long trips requiring overnight stays etc) but that can get expensive when you have a rack full of animals. i have no less than 10 of those containers.

hi, thanks for the replies.
Im thinking that i would take my frogs out of the tank. Are they hard to catch?

Also does anyone have a link for a critter carrier that would be suitable. Is extra heat needed during travelling?

cheers

Check out the KIS containers at kmart, they are cheap and work perfectly.

the best way to catch them is not to actually catch them but to put a cup, etc. in the tank and gently nudge them towards and into the container. this seems to be less stressful than actually grabbing their leg. again the critter carriers available at p__supermarket are great if they are around you. they have no online store however and i can not get a link. the containers are clear plastic with a translucent blue top. the reason these are better is the fact that unlike lees kritter keepers, there are much fewer vents (which are tiny and FF proof) which holds in the humidity.

What kind of frogs do you have? The degree of difficulty on catching a tinc vs. a vent is huge. If it were me I wouldn't hesitate to catch my tincs and move them in small glad containers with a little piece of moist sphagnum and a pothos leave. My vents, that's a little different story. They are small, fast, and sneaky and it would take a lot more effort to catch them, get them into a small container, etc....

being a college student, i have admittedly done this before. but try to find a good friend who will be available to take care of them while you are away. for instance this summer i have arranged for $100 to be paid to a friend (who i trust and who has done it before without incident) to take care of them whenever i am out of town for work etc. keep transporting frogs to a minimum and they will be less stressed.

but remember you wont easily transport frogs through means of anything but your own personal vehicle. airplanes, buses, trains, will pose a problem, especially with a large collection.
