Default Fruit Flies to big?

I just picked up my first frogs, a couple Leucs. I am not sure how old they are but they are a pretty good size. I would guess they are about half of a full sized frog. I am feeding them Hyadi, the large flightless fruit flies. It usually takes them a couple of tries to eat each fly. Is this normal or should I get some of the smaller wingless flies until they get older.

Hey, they can easily eat that sized fly, so don't worry about it.

Curt.

Maybe just to be safe you could try the smaller one`s. It won`t be long, my Leucs. are pretty serious eaters!

If I had to take a guess, the leucs you obtained were used to eating smaller flies. In time they will get the process down in terms of eating hydei. I oftentimes see this when I transition froglets from wingless/golden melanos to flightless melanos to hydei. When presented with a 'larger' fly, they struggle at first to gulp it down.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I might pick up a culture or two of smaller flies and try alternating them for a while. At least that way I will know they are well feed.

Well, the frogs I got, Vents, are eating D. Melanogaster, wingless, and don't always get them first try, they sometimes miss, I think this is because they are still young, need more experience, and just sometimes plain miss. Other times they hit them right on and they disappear.

You should be fine, stick with the larger ones because you got large frogs.

I have leucs and I use wingless melanos. They culture easily and do not have the gliding effect of the winged versions. I think they work great, and my Leucs love them.
