Just received 2 imitators! My first impression is WOW, they really ARE small, aren't they? Shwewee, these were sold as probable females - even when I add a male to the mix, they should enjoy their 29 gallon. Tons of room! Will I ever see them??

Time will tell on whether I will ever see them, but they sure are gorgeous frogs.

Well, sitting here in the office with the 2 "female" imitators in their 96oz "cup", I was taken aback when I heard one call!

In fact he called 3 times, and I confirmed the call on mistking.

So....that means I either have a pair or 2 males. One is a bit more rotund than the other, but I did not actually see which one called.

SWEET!

Once they adjust to their new home you should see them quite a bit. Imitators and Intermedius are probably the most bold and visible of the thumbnails in general.

A few ways to determine whether you've ended up with a pair...

1) You find eggs (okay I couldn't resist throwing that one in  )

2) Body shape, the female if she is female will become more plump as she prepares to lay

3) Watch the behavior when the male calls...another male responding will tend to rise up on its front legs in the direction of the calling male. Usually followed by hopping up to the male and perhaps a bit of tussling. Of course some males will become dominated by the calling male and not respond.

Females on the other hand tend to be a bit more subtle in their response to calling. They will notice but not with the 'oh yeah buddy' stance. Depending on whether they are receptive they will respond by moving towards the male or letting him approach them or keeping their distance.

Plenty of interesting behavior from these guys for sure. Good luck with them!
