Default Beginner...

New to the board and frogs. Just wanted to say hello, and ask a few questions. I live in Philadelphia and I am a 1st year vet student @ U Penn (I am a non-traditional type student, so I am a bit older). I really don't know where to start with the questions. I'll keep it simple for now. Was leaning towards tinctorius. For tank size I was thinking about a 20H or 29 (also considering some of the cube tanks (Eco??)). I was looking at some of the tanks on this board and am really impressed. Basically, how is it done (the false bottom material, the 'sprayed' on foam). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Drew

Most people around here make a viv with the following steps:

False bottom/substrate: Personally I like to use a layer of leca (expanded clay pellets) for the bottom layer. Although gravel and eggcrate may be used as well. This just allows an area for water to drain to so it can be sucked out of the viv. Then, a piece of mesh is placed over the leca/gravel etc. to seperate it from the substrate. Substrate materials cover a wide range. I like to use some orchid mix and leave it at that. Some moss of leaf litter (magnolia, oak, etc. anything thick and durable with some tannins works).

Background: Common backgrounds are cork bark, tree fern panels, coco fiber panels, and more. These are arranged as wished on the back wall of the viv, then secured in place with expanding foam (greatstuff) or silicone. The great stuff is then covered with a layer of silicone, and something (usually peat moss, coco fibers, coco husks, etc.) is pressed into it giving a natural appearance.

Then, take a selection of plants, bromeliads being among the most common and mount/plant them in desired locations.

A 20H/L or 29 gallon tank would be great for some tincs, the best being a 1.1.0 set up as females will show aggresion towards one another.

Just keep doing your research, you can never learn enough, and if you have any questions, just ask. Good luck.

Plus, there are also a lot of construction journals posted around that follow the process step-by-step, with pictures even! I've found these to be invaluable. Good luck, and welcome to the board!
