I wasnt sure where to put this, so please forgive me if its in the wrong spot, but does anyone know a good place to buy bulk petri dishes, and also, is it better to have glass or plastic? And just for kicks, is there more than one size. I had a few left from before but cannot remember where I got them from and need more as I am having a lot of breeding going on lately. Thanks for any help, Bob
Josh (pastorjosh, on this forum), is a good source for petri dishes.
I think you will want plastic dishes. You can wash them, if you want. Glass petri dishes are heavy, expensive, and getting very hard to find now. In my opinion, there is no real advantage to glass over plastic, at least for what you want to do with them. In my experience, most research laboratories are using disposable plastic almost exclusively, I haven't seen a glass dish in our lab in years...
I don't know if prices are more favorable but you can check out biological supply companies which will probably have many sizes. Ex Carolina Biological, Connecticut Valley Biological Supply, Wards Natural Science, VWR.
But Josh is more dependable shipping wise.

I have no doubt that Josh is very dependable but unless you have performed the controlled experiment of shipping from all those concerns to a private residence (institutional accounts don't count), your conclusion may be unsubstantiated.
Note this is not meant as a slight to Josh in any way....great member of the board and he offers a good variety of items for the hobbyist....
Now, just keep in mind that you must thoroughly check on shipping costs when comparing prices. Often times I see EBAY members and other institutions selling below wholesale, so unless they are selling them at a loss, they are adding it to the shipping.
If you don't want to take the time to go through the order process on my site to get a price quote with shipping, just let me know what you want and your zip and I will give you a price quote.
Hope I'm not hijacking, but my name was brought up.
Excellent point on the shipping Josh as I have made a similar observation...sort of reminds me at times of the TV offers for the Bang-o-matic for the low low price of $9.99 plus of course $4.99 for shipping and handling....
First of all, thanks for all the info about the petri dishes. Secondly, I posted on here because I would rather purchase from someone in the community as it is always beneficial to purchase from people who have a good knowledge and understanding of what you are using them for. I did place an order as soon as I learned who had them. Thanks again for all your help, Bob.
