A. bassleri "Tarapoto"
Hi all,
I'm beginning to gather information for Ameerega bassleri. I really like the looks of the 'Tarapoto' morph.
I'm having some difficulty finding basic info such as temps., if they thrive in higher humidity levels and size enclosure. I am planning to set up an 18x18x24Exo Terra but nothing is set in stone. I do not even have the enclosure/tank yet.
I'm just gathering info and opinions for more advanced keepers. My goal is to have a 'display' in my bedroom.
When I saw this photo on dendrobates.org, [see pic below] I knew instantly I want to keep and breed these as they are so awesome to look at.
So my other question is, is the Tarapoto morph at all in the US? Is anyone of the forum working specifically with Tarapotos?
Please advise me with any thing. Appreciate it!
Jess
Oh, I expect this project to be long-term until I feel comfortable enough to begin building the viv so no worries of me rushing out to get bassleri.

Re: A. bassleri "Tarapoto"
Sadly, only a few of us are presently working with this population of A. bassleri. However, other populations are a bit more common in the hobby, including the black or 'Sapasoa' population. I'd recommend looking here for more information:
Ameerega bassleri

Re: A. bassleri "Tarapoto"
Let me do you a favor...
While they are a beautiful frog and a joy to have in any collection I would reconsider keeping them in your bedroom. They can call a lot and they are loud. If you have a male in your group he will drive you bananas with his calling.
Ours seem to do well in normal frogroom temps (mid 70's, though our group did just fine in much lower temps (low 60's) for a full winter. They can tackle larger food items like 3/8" - 1/2" crickets. They seem to tolerate a wide range of humidity, but seem more active with > 75%. They are a great, easy to maintain, hardy, beautiful dart frogs - I just wouldn't want a group in my bedroom... but that's just my opinion.
Good luck!
Jeremy

Not nearly as bad as A. altamazonica... I can hear them over everything else, including the bassleri, pepperi, allobates and lugubris.

Re: A. bassleri "Tarapoto"
sorry for the hijack... but is the A. altamazonica as piercing and forceful as the bassleri/pepperi? Bassleri & Pepperi are the only frogs we've ever kept that I would actually yell at or knock on the tank to make them stop calling for at least a few minutes (usually closer to 10 seconds...). I wouldn't go so far as to label them annoying, but after a couple hours it can start to make you crazy!

Re: A. bassleri "Tarapoto"
Haha. Are blassleri louder than Epi's? I listened to a vid of SI's and those guys have some pipes! Still, I'd imagine at some point, they'd sleep, right? I don't think the sound would bother me as long as at some poin they go to beddy-bye and are quiet for most of the night?
Thanks for the link.
So, is the 18x18x24 Terra suitable? And based on experience would 1.3 be suitable? The black morph is actually pretty cool with the yellow flashes. I looked on herpologic, and I noticed he has a few ameegera as well.
There is an expo in NH in April. I wonder if I'll be lucky enough to see an Ameegera sp. and continue the learning process. {I can dream, can't I?}

Re: A. bassleri "Tarapoto"
Sean Stewart doesn't usually have ameerega..although his site shows them it hasn't been updated in a while.
Your best bet would be to contact understory enterprises as they have a number of species both pepperi and bassleri...they have two shipments this spring, one in march the other in may.

Re: A. bassleri "Tarapoto"
Yes, they are louder... but it's not as much the volume as it's the forcefulness of the call that gets tiring. It's almost like they're shouting! They should be quite for you a night. They may call at lights out for a bit, and they will be right at it at sunrise - so hope you're a morning person!
Just FYI - these guys have some really nice INIBICO black bassleri available now... INIBICO Black Bassleri
