Alot of the sponsors sell leaf litter including magnolia leaves which look really nice. You can also collect leafs from outside. I use oak because they have a low decomposition rate but just about any type should be fine some will just decompose faster than others. To ensure they do not have parasites bake them in your oven at around 300 degrees for at least an hour. Just keep an eye on them you dont want a brush fire in your oven.
