I looked up hybrid in my 40 year old dictionary. the first of three definitions is "the offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock; especially, the offspring produced by breeding plant or animals of different varieties, species, or races.

i think its safe to say that this deffinition is including subspecies and populations into hybridizing candidates.
