Getting rid of them ahead of their breeding cycle, tend to get rid of my cultures around week 4 has helped.
If you do notice mites in your cultures, take note of how old they are......
If you do have them it is not a bad idea to totally sanitize the area where your flies are stored and start with new cultures.......buy or obtain from a friend
