Why not? I think they'd be fine, but I do think a single airhole would probably be a good idea.

Im personally now a fan of the cube sterlite containers with the flip-top you can buy at wal-mart for .97. They are clear, and allow light in for algae/plant growth (I use algae and duckweed). You can also write on the top with a dry erase marker to keep track of the birthdate and species, and erase it later for a new tad. They also stack easy, and hold a decent amount of water.
